On 17th Oct, 2018, the civil engineering department of Shree L. R. Tiwari college laid a new foundation for the Civil Engineering Students Association (CESA) and a guest lecture was arranged on personality development and resume writing. Here are few insights from the inauguration program. The inauguration started by felicitating the principal of L.R. Tiwari college Mr. Ram Reddy, the guest lecturer Mrs. Kavita Chaudhary, H.O.D of the Civil department Mrs. NehaBadigar, staff co-ordinator for CESA Mr. ShantiaumKhatavkar, president of CESA Miss ShrutiGhadage and the CESA members. After which Mr. Ram Reddy sir enlightened us through a small speech followed by the speech of the HOD and then Shantiaum sir who told about the CESA previously formed and assured the every fault and mistakes happened earlier won’t repeat and more and more activities to be done in the upcoming days. Lastly miss president introduced students to CESA and all the activities that could be done under CESA and also gave introduction of all the members forming the CESA. After the speech was over the host Mr. AbhishekGuha and Miss Disha Parekh wrapped up the session with vote of thanks and the inaugural session ended.
As the inaugural session ended, without wasting any time Mrs. Kavita started the lecture over the topic personality development. Firstly miss asked the students to draw a circle and then divide it into eight parts. As the students completed drawing miss started naming each part of the circle and asked the students to do the same. The parts were named as follows confidence, body language, presentation skills, dressing sense, attitude, voice tone, eye contact, fluency. Each name having score 10 with it. As the students finished miss asked them to give a rating out of 10 in the circle for themselves.
Miss then explained that this process is called as the Personality Assessment. And the gap between the circle boundaries and the figure formed is to be covered for having a perfect personality. Then miss started the process to cover the gap for each aspects of personality. Fluency can be covered by observing and practicing the language and increasing the vocab. Confidence can be gained by acceptance of the flaws and mistakes, Doing things for ourselves and affirmation. For the body language one should have pretty decent smile, use of hands gestures for description and maintain eye contact with the person. Things to be avoided are hair scratching, nail biting, multi-tasking. For this miss stated that, “Nobody gets a 2nd chance for 1st Impression.” Dressing sense can be improved by choosing the perfect colour combination, clothes should be of proper fitting, beltcolour should match with the colour of shoes.
Attitude depends on the thoughts, one must always have positive thoughts and stay aroud optimistic people also reading good books helps to improve the attitude. Voice tone while talking must be proper lower voice must be used, no other thoughts other than content must be going through the mind whilst speaking. Lastly miss explained about eye contact which are of two type: Business gaze and Social gaze and one must always use business gaze while in meeting, interview or such other things. With this the personality development part was over and miss then moved on to the resume writing where miss showed 2-3 samples of resumes and told what are the dos and don’ts of resume writing.
The lecture ended with Vote of Thanks by staff co-ordinator Mr. Shantiaum sir. The seminar was very informative and provided the students with enormous knowledge on various aspects of personality and resume writing. They loved the event as a whole.

Report on “Engineering, Procurement, and Construction” Guest Lecture Conducted by Prof. Jamaluddin Maghrabi Subject : EPC Projects Date of Expert Lecture: 12 th October 2017 Time of Expert Lecture: : 11.00 am to 02.00 pm Venue : Seminar Hall Topic Covered: Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Projects Details of Speaker: Name : Prof. JAMALUDDIN MAGHRABI Educational Qualification : M-tech structures (Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli)
The speakers mentioned above, gave a lecture on Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Projects.
EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction and is a prominent form of contracting agreement in the construction industry. The engineering and construction contractor will carry out the detailed engineering design of the project, procure all the equipment and materials necessary, and then construct to deliver a functioning facility or asset to their clients. Companies that deliver EPC Projects are commonly referred to as EPC Contractors.
The EPC phase of the project is also known as the Execution phase which normally follows what is known as a FEED or Front End Engineering Design phase. The FEED is a basic engineering design used as the basis for the EPC phase. The FEED can be divided into separate packages covering different portions of the project. The FEED packages are used as the basis for bidding on when the client offers the EPC work to the market,
Normally the EPC Contractor has to execute and deliver the project within an agreed time and budget, commonly known as a Lump Sum Turn Key (LSTK) Contract. An EPC LSTK Contract places the risk for schedule and budget on the EPC Contractor.
The Project Owner or client to the EPC Contractors will normally have a presence in the EPC Contractors offices during the execution of the EPC Contract. The Client places what can be termed a Project Management Team or PMT to overlook the EPC Contractor. The client PMT may require specialist help and bring on board Project Management Consultants or PMC‘s to assist. The PMT / PMC will ensure the EPC Contractor is carrying out the works in accordance with the agreed scope of works and in accordance with the Contract. It is quite common for the Engineering and Construction Contractor which delivered the FEED to be offered a Project Management Consultancy (PMC) Contract.
In some instances which can be related to the time a project owner would like the project delivered, an engineering and construction company can be given work on a direct reimbursable basis to start with followed by conversion to LSTK once sufficient time and resources can be allocated to quantifying and pricing the scope of works. One method to convert from a reimbursable to LSTK Contract is called an Open Book Estimate or OBE in which the Contractor will open all their working documentation or books for representatives of the client to assess what the total scope of works for delivering the project will be. An agreed LSTK scope of works and price will be negotiated and agreed between EPC Contractor and Project Owner during the execution of EPC activities.

REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO BANDRA SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT
On receiving the letter of permission from Bandra sewage treatment plant Mubai-400078 students with two faculty members (Mr. Pushkar and Ms. Prajakta) went on an industrial visit on 14-09-2017.We all assembled at the Treatment plant at 10am. An engineer-in-charge of plant received us at the entrance and gave a brief introduction about the treatment plant. Then he took us around from one section of plant to the next and explained the working involved in the treatment of waste water in the plant. He showed the working of the unit of the treatment plant to that point of view he explained the necessity of the treatment of water
Locatin of plant: Agasti apartment 30,Bandra reclamation road, mount marry, Bandra west
Necessity of plant:
- Sewage plant plays an important role for the mankind. The main function of these plants is to make the water of the sewage clean that comes from home, commercial and industrial sectors. The treatment of sewage water has become the need of the hour as it stops spreading the diseases and illness caused by the sewage water.
- It helps society in making the water as well as environment clean. The sewage treatment plant works composed of 3 stages that make its working more efficient. The three stages of these plants include the primary stage, the secondary stage and the tertiary stage. In primary stage, the contaminants that are easy to eliminate are taken out from the wastewater. These substances may include oils, grease, and fats that can be easily removed from the surface area. The solids things like grits, stones, rocks, etc. are strained. At the secondary stage, the removal of biological contaminants in wastewater takes place. A number of methods are processed there to eradicate the unwanted elements. This stage is considered as the important stage of the treatment plants. At the tertiary treatment, which is the last stage of the plant, the water is get cleaned purely to get discharged in the environment. This is composed of man-made or artificial systems that help in filtration. At this stage, the nitrogen and phosphorous content is eliminated from the water. In addition to this, the water is further disinfected using chemicals like chlorine as well as treatment of UV.Through these stages, the final water that comes out is clean and free from pollutants that can be safely released to the environment.

In this plant, we seen primary treatment of sewage water
Primary treatment
- Screening:
Pretreatment removes all materials that can be easily collected from the raw sewage before they damage or clog the pumps and sewage lines of primary treatment clarifier. Objects commonly removed during pretreatment include trash, tree limbs, leaves, branches, and other large objects.
The influent in sewage water passes through a bar screen to remove all large objects like cans, rags, sticks, plastic packets etc. carried in the sewage stream. This is most commonly done with an automated mechanically raked bar screen in modern plants serving large populations, while in smaller or less modern plants, a manually cleaned screen may be used.
- Grit Chamber
Pretreatment may include a sand or grit channel or chamber, where the velocity of the incoming sewage is adjusted to allow the settlement of sand, grit, stones, and broken glass. These particles are removed because they may damage pumps and other equipment. For small sanitary sewer systems, the grit chambers may not be necessary, but grit removal is desirable at larger plantGrit chambers come in 3 types: horizontal grit chambers, aerated grit chambers and vortex grit chambers. The process is called sedimentation.
Grit always contains some organic matter which decomposes and creates odors. To facilitate economical disposal of grit without causing nuisance, the organic matter is sometimes washed from the grit and returned to the wastewater. Special equipment is available to wash grit. Mechanical cleaning equipment generally provides for wash
Quantity of Grit: This depends on the type of sewer system, the condition of the sewer lines and other factors. Strictly domestic wastewater collected in well-constructed sewers will contain little grit, while combined wastewater will carry large volumes of grit, reaching a peak at times of severe storms. In general, 1.0 to 4.0 cu.ft. of grit per million gallons of wastewater flow can be exceeding grit with wastewater as it is removed from the chamber.
Disposal of Screenings and Grit
Screenings decompose rapidly with foul odors. They should be kept covered in cans at the screens and removed at least daily for disposal by burial or incineration. The walls and platforms of the screen chamber and screen itself should be hosed down and kept clean. Grit containing much organic matter may have to be buried to prevent odor nuisances.
- Pre aeration
Pre-aeration of wastewater, that is aeration before primary treatment is sometimes provided for the following purposes:
(1) To obtain a greater removal of suspended solids in sedimentation tanks.
(2) To assist in the removal of grease and oil carried in the wastewater.
(3) To freshen up septic wastewater prior to further treatment.
(4) BOD reduction.
Pre-aeration is accomplished by introducing air into the wastewater for a period of 20 to 30 minutes at the design flow. This may be accomplished by forcing compressed air into the wastewater at a rate of about 0.10 cu.ft. per gallon of wastewater when 30 minutes of aeration is provided or by mechanical agitation whereby the wastewater is stirred or agitated so that new surfaces are continually brought into contact with the atmosphere for absorption of air.
To insure proper agitation when compressed air is forced into the wastewater, air is usually supplied at the rate of 1.0 to 4.0 cubic feet per minute per linear foot of tank or channel. When air for mechanical agitation (either with or without the use of chemicals) is used for the additional purpose of obtaining increased reduction in BOD, the detention period should be at least 45 minutes at design flow.
The agitation of wastewater in the presence of air tends to collect or flocculate lighter suspended solids into heavier masses which settle more readily in the sedimentation tanks. Pre-aeration also helps to separate grease and oil from the wastewater and wastewater solids and to carry them to the surface. By the addition of air, aerobic conditions are also restored in septic wastewater to improve subsequent treatment. The devices and equipment for introducing the air into the wastewater are the same or similar to those used in the activated sludge process.

SPEAKERS | TOPIC | |
Er HITESH BAROT | INTRODUCTION & CALCULATION OF CONCRETE MIX BY AMBUJA METHOD
Er PRAKASH KUDCHE | CORREXT STEPS FOR MAKING CONCRETE
Er SHWETA AGARWAL | LAB DEMONSTRATION & TASTE |
The speakers mentioned above gave a lecture on Concrete mix design, focusing especially on Design procedure, materials, various tests on concrete, etc.
CONCRETE MIX DESIGN:
In these mixes the performance of the concrete is specified by the designer but the mix proportions are determined by the producer of concrete, except that the minimum cement content can be laid down. This is most rational approach to the selection of mix proportions with specific materials in mind possessing more or less unique characteristics. The approach results in the production of concrete with the appropriate properties most economically. However, the designed mix does not serve as a guide since this does not guarantee the correct mix proportions for the prescribed performance.
Factors to be considered for mix design
- The grade designation giving the characteristic strength requirement of concrete.
- The type of cement influences the rate of development of compressive strength of concrete.
- Maximum nominal size of aggregates to be used in concrete may be as large as possible within the limits prescribed by IS 456:2000.
- The cement content is to be limited from shrinkage, cracking and creep.
- The workability of concrete for satisfactory placing and compaction is related to the size and shape of section, quantity and spacing of reinforcement and technique used for transportation, placing and compaction.
The building of balsa-wood bridges is very often used as an educational technology. It may be accompanied by a larger project involving varying areas of study.
Typically classes which would include a balsa wood bridge cover the subject areas of physics, engineering, static equilibrium, or building trades, although it may be done independently of any of these subjects. Building a balsa wood bridge can be done after completing a section or unit covering a related topic or the process of design and building can be used to guide students to a better understanding of the desired subject area.
