Over the course of human history the emergence of certain new technologies have globally transformed life as we know it. Disruptive technologies like fire, the printing press, oil, and television have dramatically changed both the planet we live on and mankind itself, most often in extraordinary and unpredictable ways. In pre-history these disruptions took place over hundreds of years. With the time compression induced by our rapidly advancing technology, they can now take place in less than a generation. We are currently at the edge of one such event. In ten years robotic systems will fly our planes, grow our food, explore space, discover life saving drugs, fight our wars, sweep our homes and deliver our babies. In the process, this robotics driven disruptive event will create a new 200 billion dollar global industry and change life as you now know it, forever. Just as my children cannot imagine a world without electricity, your children will never know a world without robots. Come take a bold look at the future and the opportunities for Mechanical Engineers that wait there.

The Three Laws of Robotics are:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law

CLASSIFICATIONS OF ROBOTS

When a viscous fluid flows along a fixed impermeable wall, or past the rigid surface of an immersed body, an essential condition is that the velocity at any point on the wall or other fixed surface is zero. The extent to which this condition modifies the general character of the flow depends upon the value of the viscosity. If the body is of streamlined shape and if the viscosity is small without being negligible, the modifying effect appears to be confined within narrow regions adjacent to the solid surfaces; these are called boundary layers. Within such layers the fluid velocity changes rapidly from zero to its main-stream value, and this may imply a steep gradient of shearing stress; as a consequence, not all the viscous terms in the equation of motion will be negligible, even though the viscosity, which they contain as a factor, is itself very small.A more precise criterion for the existence of a well-defined laminar boundary layer is that the Reynolds number should be large, though not so large as to imply a breakdown of the laminar flow.

Heat exchangers are devices that transfer energy between fluids at different temperatures by heat transfer. These devices can be used widely both in daily life and industrial applications such as steam generators in thermal power plants, distillers in chemical industry, evaporators and condensers in HVAC applications and refrigeration process, heat sinks, automobile radiators and regenerators in gas turbine engines. This seminar discusses the basic design methods for two fluid heat exchangers.

Around 80 students from Final year Mechanical and Staff members attended the programme. The resource person gave introduction to HVAC, its classification, its types, and their applications. He shared real life experiences and told the students about the importance of HVAC in day to day life. There was an interactive question and answer session following the presentation and the programme came to an end with the proposal of vote of thanks by one of the students.

TitleGUEST LECTURE ON “DESIGN OF AUTOMOBILE” 16th MARCH 2016
SpeakerMr. Harshal Patel
Date and Venue16th March 2016 in Mechanical Department, SLRTCE.
Description

On 16th March 2016, a guest lecture was organized by the Mechanical Department, SLRTCE. The lecture was guided by Mr. Harshal Patel. He has completed his engineering in Automobile and specializes in Design. The lecture was conducted on the topic of “Design of Automobile” which is required for participation in competitions like BAJA, FSAE and Go-kart. He briefed the students about the concepts related in designing of the vehicle. It was an enlightening session as he shared real life experiences and told the students about the importance of design. He focused on various aspects related to Engine, Gearbox, and Driveline etc. The student learnt about aspects like how to select different types of Engine, Gearbox, gear ratios. It was a learning and interactive session for the students where he answered all the queries put up by the students to their full satisfaction.

Machining operations are among the most versatile and accurate manufacturing processes in terms of its capability to produce diverse and complex geometric features. This chapter takes its focus on the machining processes utilizing sharp cutting tools to remove materials from the workpiece by shear deformation. The main principle of these processes is providing the relative motions between the cutting tool and the workpiece, which is accomplished through machine tools. The machine tools are discussed and categorized based on the employed cutting tools: single-point cutting tools, multipoint cutting tools, or grinding wheels. Machining centers, which have flexibilities to perform various machining operations with different cutting tools on more than one workpiece, are also discussed. Drives and controls are responsible to respectively provide and regulate the motions of the machine tool components. Thus, industrial designs and technologies of spindle drives and feed drives, as well as numerical controls, are described in this chapter. Finally, different mechanical designs, in terms of the kinematic mechanism to provide the relative motions between the tool and the workpiece, have been introduced to the manufacturing floors. Each of these designs has penetrated today’s manufacturing floor bringing certain superiority as compared to the conventional machine tools. This chapter discusses important characteristics of a few of these emerging machine tool designs, namely, industrial robots, parallel and hybrid kinematic machine tools, and reconfigurable machine tools

Increasingly, stakeholders are asking or requiring organizations to be more environmentally responsible with respect to their products and processes; reasons include regulatory requirements, product stewardship, public image, and potential competitive advantages. This seminar  presents an exploratory study of the relationships between specific environmentally sustainable manufacturing practices, and specific competitive outcomes in an environmentally important but under-researched industryIn general, empirical research on the impact of environmental practices on organizational outcomes is inconclusive, partly due to limitations of earlier studies.

Oxyacetylene or Gas welding- Basic principles, types of flame, components and applications Oxyacetylene/Gas welding: The oxyacetylene welding process uses a combination of oxygen and acetylene gas to provide a high temperature flame. OAW is a manual process in which the welder must personally control the the torch movement and filler rod application. The term oxyfuel gas welding outfit refers to all the equipment needed to weld. Cylinders contain oxygen and acetylene gas at extremely high pressure.  The temperature generated during the process is 33000c, When the metal is fused, oxygen from the atmosphere and the torch combines with molten metal and forms oxides, results defective weld. Fluxes are added to the welded metal to remove oxides, Common fluxes used are made of sodium, potassium, Lithium and borax. Flux can be applied as paste, powder, liquid, solid coating or gas..

Machine and Forming Technologies pathway provides students with an understanding of manufacturing processes and systems common to careers in machine tool and materials forming industries. Representative topics include trade vocabulary; shop math; basic material identification; proper use of hand and machine tools; reading precision measuring tools within .001” and the interpretation of machined and formed-part prints; the cutting, shaping, fastening, and finishing of machined parts; fixtures; forging, molding (casting), cold forming, and shearing processes.
